Take part in a course

Join a course from an invite or its link, get into a team, hand in course tasks with your team and book office hours.

A course is a class your university runs on StartupCorners. In it you work in a team, and each team gets its own startup page and its own workspace: tasks, files, meetings and chat.

Join the course

Your professor invites you by email or shares the course link.

  • From an email invite: if you already have an account with the invited address, you are in the course at once and get an email. Otherwise, open the link in the email and choose Create your account, or I already have an account to sign in and join. The link works for 7 days.
  • From the course link: open it and choose Create an account or I have an account, then join. Students can use any email, a personal one included.
  • From the course's page, when your school shared one (like startupcorners.com/c/your-school): choose Join the course, then the same steps as the course link.

When you set up a new account, pick Student when asked How will you use StartupCorners? Then you land in the course.

The course is in the workspace menu at the top of the sidebar, under Programs. See Switch between your company and your communities.

Get into a team

Without a team, your course Home (and Teams) offers two ways in.

To start a team:

  1. Choose Start a team.
  2. Type a Team name, and What are you building? in one line.
  3. Under Teammates, add classmates who have no team yet.
  4. Choose Start team.

You are the team's lead (its owner). Classmates you add get an invite and join when they accept. When the course needs approval, your team waits for a professor or TA: its page and workspace are ready at once, and it joins the course once it is approved.

Or Wait to be placed: a professor or TA puts you in a team, and you get a notification. A team's lead can also add you.

You are in one team per course. Staff can move you to another team.

Start here

Your course Home starts with Start here until you are done: Introduce yourself in #introductions, Read the course rules (when the course has some), Find a team and Finish your profile.

The first time you open the course's Home, a short tour shows you around it. See Take the tour of your workspace.

The course's channels

The course's chat channels are in the sidebar, under Channels: announcements for news from your professors, general for everyone, and introductions. Only the course staff post in announcements; you can react and reply in a thread.

Your course Home

Once you are in a team, Home shows:

  • what is due next;
  • Course tasks, with your team's status for each, and Hand in on the next one;
  • Latest in the course, the newest post in the course's discussions;
  • Your team, with Open team workspace and Message team;
  • Office hours, when the course offers them;
  • Course files, with All files;
  • Latest in channels, the newest messages in the course's channels.

Teams lists every team in the course and who is in it. Yours is marked Your team.

Hand in a course task

Course tasks show in your team's own Tasks, with the course's name on them. Only the course staff change them. You hand in from the task, in your team's workspace.

  1. Choose Hand in on the course Home, or open the task in your team's Tasks.
  2. In the task, add files with Add from Files or Upload. Uploads are saved in your team's Files, in a Hand-ins folder.
  3. If you like, write a Note for the course staff (optional).
  4. Choose the hand-in button: Hand in for and your team's name.

Any teammate can hand in for the team. A hand-in needs a file or a note, and holds up to 20 files.

  • Until the end of the due date, Take back makes it a draft again, so you can change it.
  • After the due date you can still hand in. It shows as late, and a late hand-in can't be taken back.
  • To change a hand-in once the due date has passed, ask the course staff to reopen it. A reopened hand-in says when it was reopened: change it and hand it in again.

A team still waiting for approval hands in once it is in the course.

Book office hours

  1. Open Office hours in the course's menu, or the Office hours card on Home.
  2. Choose Book next to a professor, TA or mentor.
  3. Pick a time and choose Confirm booking.

The meeting shows in the course's Calendar.

Discussions

Discussions in the course's menu holds announcements and questions for everyone in the course. Read, post and comment there. See Start a discussion in your community.

Who sees what

  • Course staff (professors and TAs) and your team's mentors see what your team hands in. They see that a draft exists, but its files and note only once you hand it in. They never see your team's own tasks, files or chats.
  • Classmates see the teams of the course, who is in each one, and the students without a team. They can open your team's page.
  • The course's page (like startupcorners.com/c/your-school) lists its members and its Teams. A member's own startup is not listed there, and your team shows only to people who can open its page.
  • Comments on a course task are seen by everyone in the course.
  • Your team's page stays inside the university: only members of the school community, the course's people and your team can open it. To open it to everyone, the team's owner asks to go public. See Ask to make your student startup public.
