Mega Rounds: AI Infrastructure Takes Center Stage
The headline story of the week belonged to two cloud and compute platforms that together absorbed more capital than most sectors see in a quarter.
- Crusoe, a data center and cloud provider, closed a $3B financing round, the largest disclosed deal of the week.
- Fluidstack, a distributed GPU cloud platform, followed with a $1.5B raise.
- Gridfield, a new AI infrastructure startup based in Europe, is reported to be closing a round at a $600M valuation, backed by Bessemer Venture Partners and Creandum, according to Sifted sources.
Series B and Growth Rounds
Beyond the mega deals, several growth-stage companies across sectors secured meaningful rounds.
- iPronics (Valencia, Spain), which builds silicon photonics optical circuit switching for AI data centers, raised $125M (approximately 108M euros) in a Series B co-led by Maverick Silicon and Light Street Capital, with NVIDIA participating.
- Wonderful raised $550M, representing one of the larger growth-stage rounds tracked in European tech this week.
- Comet, an Indian sneaker brand, raised approximately $12M (Rs 100 crore) in a Series B led by Verlinvest, earmarked for retail expansion and sole R&D.
Seed and Early-Stage Raises
Early-stage activity remained steady across AI governance, defence technology, and clean energy.
- AI Score (London), which helps enterprises govern generative and agentic AI deployments, raised $5M in seed funding led by Fuel Ventures.
- Creoir (Oulu, Finland), a defence-focused voice AI startup, secured seed funding from Gungnir Capital targeting a 2M euro round to commercialize its EdgeVUI and Operator Assistant products.
- Octave.energy (Mechelen, Belgium), a profitable cleantech startup offering battery energy storage and energy management systems, raised 10M euros in a Series A led by SPDG Growth.
- Stellar Alpina (Zurich), developing compact rocket engines for in-space propulsion, received 160,000 euros from Venture Kick.
Fund and Debt Activity
Beyond company-level rounds, capital formation at the fund level and via debt instruments added to the week's totals.
- WAD Capital (Ghent, Belgium), a firm that acquires small and mid-sized European companies facing succession challenges, reached a 67.5M euro first close for its debut fund, anchored by a 25M euro commitment from the European Investment Fund.
- Tolaram, an African consumer goods and fintech operator, secured $51M in debt financing, reported by TechCabal.
- Nomba, a Nigerian fintech, raised $3M, also noted by TechCabal.
What the Day's Raises Signal
The concentration of capital in AI infrastructure is now difficult to ignore. Two companies building the physical and cloud layer beneath AI applications pulled in $4.5B between them, and a third infrastructure startup is reportedly closing at a $600M valuation without a formal announcement yet. At the same time, the week's other themes, optical networking with NVIDIA backing, enterprise AI governance, and defence-grade voice interfaces, suggest that investors are moving down the stack, funding the pipes, controls, and interfaces that large model deployments require rather than the models themselves. The marginal dip in Indian VC inflows and the sharp 63 percent drop in European tech funding during August serve as a reminder that the headline numbers are concentrated in a small number of very large bets, while deal volume at the seed and Series A level remains more subdued than the totals imply.
