Startup Funding Recap August 12 2026: Top Raises Across AI and Deep Tech

Fund Closes and Macro Moves

The biggest headline of the day came from the venture fund level rather than a single startup raise.

  • Accel closed an oversubscribed $550M India-focused fund, just 19 months after its previous $650M India vehicle. Notably, the firm still has more than 55% of that prior fund available for deployment, signaling aggressive conviction in the market rather than capital exhaustion.
  • Scaleup Europe, a public-private fund targeting $6B, made its debut investment by backing Finnish satellite intelligence company ICEYE. The fund's structure blends institutional and government capital, and its first check going to a space-tech firm sets a clear thematic tone.

Growth and Late-Stage Raises

A handful of more mature companies secured meaningful capital to push toward commercialization or market expansion.

  • Vertical Aerospace (Bristol, eVTOL aircraft): approximately $100M in financing commitments from existing and new investors, intended to advance certification of its Valo four-passenger electric aircraft.
  • Quartr (Stockholm, institutional finance data): $18M round led by Altos Ventures, with new participation from SEB, to widen its AI-ready public company investor relations data coverage.

Seed and Early-Stage Rounds

Early-stage activity was concentrated in AI, deeptech, and specialized B2B tooling.

  • Discovered Materials (AI-driven semiconductor materials discovery): $9M seed round to build AI agents that accelerate adoption of new materials for chip manufacturing.
  • Model ML (London, AI automation for financial services): undisclosed equity investment from HSBC Asset Management, a notable strategic backer for an early-stage fintech.
  • Palette (Copenhagen, AI operating system for teams): $3M pre-seed led by Ugly Duckling Ventures, targeting organizations building AI-native workflows.
  • Zerolook (Zug, B2B flight shopping API): approximately $2M pre-seed led by Playfair, with participation from Vento Ventures, TrueSight Ventures, and Alpha Venture.
  • Perkant Tech (India, lab-free health screening devices): approximately $790K from a government innovation fund, for its Abhay Parimiti automated health assessment device.

Grant and Non-Dilutive Funding

Not all capital today came in the form of equity.

  • Exobiosphere (Luxembourg, space biotech): $1M in non-dilutive grant funding via Luxembourg's Jeune Entreprise Innovante scheme, directed toward drug discovery research conducted in microgravity environments.
  • AquaNab (Hamburg, aquaculture biotech): undisclosed investment from Nordic Foodtech VC to develop nanoantibodies that treat sea lice and other aquaculture diseases.

Closing Perspective

Today's mix of announcements points to a few durable themes. Investor appetite for India remains strong and fast-moving, as Accel's rapid oversubscribed close demonstrates. At the early stage, AI infrastructure and tooling continue to attract pre-seed and seed checks across Europe and the US, with financial services emerging as a particularly active vertical, given raises from Quartr, Model ML, and Zerolook. The Vertical Aerospace financing and ICEYE backing via Scaleup Europe also reinforce that deep capital is flowing into hardware-intensive, long-cycle bets, particularly where government or quasi-public structures can absorb early risk. The presence of grants and non-dilutive funding alongside conventional rounds suggests founders in regulated or research-heavy sectors are becoming more deliberate about preserving equity at the earliest stages.
